Subject: KFlop interface with Mitsubishi MR-J2S servo system
Hi TK,

I would like to drive the MR-J2S servo system by KFlop open collector output, according to servo system manual, the input side internal circuit look like the below diagram.

R=1.2K opto-coupler

24V >-----^^^^------|>|-----------o Step

(Open collector INPUT)

GND |-----------------------------o GND

I am not sure whether the open-collector output of KFlop can drive it or not, I am afraid the current may too high, do you have any idea about this? Thanks.

Best regards,
Benny

Hi Benny,

No you can NOT connect 24V opto signals to KFlop Open collector outputs.  The outputs are diode clamped to the the 3.3V power, so they are limited to a max of ~4V.   This works when driving optos connected to +5V.

You didn't send any link to any Manuals for your MR-J2S.  Or what you are trying to connect to.   But I did some searches and might have found something similar.  They seem to provide an additional connection directly to the Anode so a lower voltage could be used.
Regards
TK

Hi TK,

The 24V source is not directly connected to the opto-coupler, there is a resister (1.2K) between then for bias purpose, just like the following diagram:

R=1.2K opto-coupler

24V >-----^^^^------|>|-----------o Step

(Connected to Kflop OC O/P)

GND |-----------------------------o GND

I think is should be okay, right? What I am worry about is the max current that the open collector output of Kflop can handle.

Best regards,
Benny.

Hi Benny,

The problem is that when the KFlop output goes "open" it is still diode clamped to 3.3V and can't rise above ~4V.

So when the KFlop output goes "open" and "closed" the output pin will switch between 4V and 0V.  Assuming an opto diode drop of 1V the 1.2K resistor will "see" either 23V or 19V.  So the current will be either 19ma or 16ma.  The opto will be on in both cases.  Also KFlop outputs are limited to 16ma.

TK

Hi Benny,

Do you have a manual?  What pins are these?

If you have access to the Anode connect it to 3.3V through a 200ohm

Hi Benny,

You didn't include a link to the manual but I found this:

Is that your unit?

I don't think that drive will accept Step/Dir inputs.

It only accepts quadrature input from a Manual Pulse Generator.  KFlop can only output Step/Dir not Quadrature.

But electrically it could be connected as:

Leave OPC disconnected.
Connect PG and NG to 3.3V
Connect KFLOP Open Collector to PP
Connect KFLOP Open Collector to NP

TK

Hi TK,

I am using the MR-J2S-40A, they have same input pin but it accept step/dir input. For your suggestion, is it possible to use the LVTTL output instead of open collector? Then, I can save a 3.3V DC source.

Best regards,
Benny

Yes That should work also.  KFlop could provide the 3.3V.

what is the max souce current of kflop LVTTL output? I am afraid it is not enough to drive the opto coupler.

Hi Benny,

Good point.  KFlop sources > 2.9V @ 16ma.  Sink < 0.4V @ 16ma
But the 5V tolerant I/Os have a 47 ohm in series.

You will probably need a buffer.
